Student research began on the first day of classes at UOSF. Whether this course is organic chemistry or Greek tragedy is not important. We believe that outstanding students learn best through guided hands-on exploration and experimentation. This is our mission – a mission we highly value – to integrate projects with genuine scientific, academic, and creative value into every undergraduate and graduate course we offer. By the time they reached their senior year, 85% of undergraduate students had participated in teacher led research.
At UOSF, research is not just something that happens in the laboratory or library (although we both have good examples). This situation occurs when students measure the mercury content in local streams and release their results as a documentary. Or when the freshman seminar helps save a historic building in Richmond. Or when a student organization prepares a proposal for a medical aid trip to Central America. Research and UOSF experience are inseparable.
UOSF students should receive education that values their original intellectual contributions. We provide many different ways for undergraduate and graduate students to conduct fully funded, teacher guided research projects.
